 A ”Feel Better” Bag

HNC Intern Amanda Tubbs, while pursuing a Master’s in Psychology Counseling, has been drawn to HNC’s bereavement programs, where she applies her expressive art skills to help bereaved children achieve a new normalcy. An HNC internship fits into Matthew Burdman’s Master’s of Social Work studies and interest in gerontology, but his strongest impetus to help grieving children comes from watching his best friend succumb to cancer.

Together, Amanda and Matthew utilize their compassionate empathy in a bereavement services community outreach program provided at no cost to grieving students at a local elementary school. “I had to deal with my grief issues,” confides Matthew. “It’s inspiring to help others work through theirs.”

“We use art and play to help these resilient youngsters get back to being children,” Amanda says, displaying a worksheet upon which kids express their feelings of grief.

Each child receives a “Feel Better” bag into which they place coping items such as hugs and memories; supports they carry with them on their journey toward recovery. Amanda and Matthew will carry this meaningful experience with them throughout their careers and for their entire life.

Loss is agonizing at any age. We all can use what Amanda, Matthew and HNC provide: compassion, support and a “Feel Better” Bag.
